Existential questions are omnipresent in the contemporary society and there is a perpetual tendency for modern people to question the significance of life in what is coined as having an existential crisis. This stems from the idea of existentialism as popularized by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre who proposed that existence precedes essence and “that man first exists: he materializes in the world, encounters himself, and only afterward defines himself”. The self in this case, is seen as a spontaneous identity that can be crafted through one’s assumption of authorship in the creation of self-narratives; ones that seek temporal coherence with the individual’s reassembled past, perceived present and anticipated future that ascribes meaning towards his life. In the process of selfhood, an individual might still feel radically incomplete as one’s desire to assign meaning to himself is never quite achieved due to the invariably renewed ideal of his being. Consequently, the perplexity of the existential self presents the spiritual dilemma of the contemporary era.

In the quest for seeking oneself and its inherent meaning of existence, people often turn to alterity for answers. The encounters with the otherness of peculiar objects, unfamiliar environments, sublime nature and disparate cultures for example, may trigger possibilities of discoveries, growth and transformation within the self as the individual relates to the transcendental experience of the other. Such sensibilities may push the boundaries of one’s imagination of the self and open doors for its redefinition. How exactly do such epiphanies add significance to our ever-changing selves and allow us to reformulate our very existence? What is it in alterity that offers such alluring solace in times of self doubt and personal crisis? Exploring the foregoing inclinations of modernity, the exhibition presents works from six artists – whom in their search for intrinsic meaning, turn to various forms of otherness such as nature, objects, the body, etc. for inspirations. The disparate artworks culminate into an array of autobiographical visual narratives that aim to cast a light upon the elusive existential self.


현대인들은 끊임없이 자신들이 겪고있는 실존적 위기에 관련하여 삶의 중요성에 의문을 갖는다. 프랑스 철학자 잘 폴 사르트르는 실존주의 철학을 통해 실존은 본질을 앞선다고 주장하였다. 태초에 인간성, 존재는 무엇도 의미하지 않기에 존재, 본질이 이 가치 및 의미는 당초에는 존재하지 않으며 후에 만들어진 것이라고 이야기한다. 이러한 질문 속에서 개인의 과거를 재 조립하고 현재를 인식하며 자신의 삶에 의미를 부여하고자 하는 현대인들의 과정이 불완전하다고 느낄 수 있다. 즉 실존적 자아의 당혹감은 현대 시대의 영적 딜레마를 보여주는 것이다.

나 자신과 존재의 내제적인 의미를 찾아가는 과정에서 사람들은 종종 다름을 그 대답으로서 의지한다. 예를 들어 특이한 대상, 낯선 환경, 숭고한 자연, 이질적인 문화와의 만남은 스스로가 개별자로서 다른 사람의 초월적 경험과 관련되면서 자신 안에서 발견, 성장의 가능성을 촉발할 수 있다. 그 이번 전시는 앞서 언급한 현대적 성향을 탐구하는 총 여섯 명의 작가들의 작품을 선보인다. 그들은 내제적인 의미를 찾기 위해 자연, 사물, 신체 등과 같은 다양한 형태의 영감에 의지한다. 서로 다른 예술 작품들은 결국 이해하기 힘든 실존적 자아에 빚을 던지려는 자전적인 시각적 서술로 귀결된다.
