전시의 제목 《Sow-nar: 사우나》는 선리가 이전부터 천착해온 대상인 ‘사우나(Sauna)’의 어원을 풀어쓰고 있다. 사우나가 유래한 나라로 알려진 핀란드에서 ‘와!’를 의미하는 감탄사 ‘sow’와 땀을 뺀다는 의미의 ‘nar’의 합성어로 목욕을 뜻하는 이 단어를 다시금 쪼개어 표기한 것은 이토록 일상적인 활동의 의미를 유심히 궁리해보고자 하는 데 있다. 핀란드에서는 목욕을 몸에 들러붙은 오염을 씻어내는 위생적 기능으로서의 ‘세신’이라는 행위를 넘어 차가운 물(목욕)과 뜨거운 증기(사우나)에 반복적으로 신체를 노출시키는 과정을 경유하는 의식적인 활동으로 보기도 한다. 선리는 추운 기후에서 긴장된 근육을 이완시킴으로써 지친 신체뿐만 아니라 정신도 함께 회복하는 핀란드 특유의 사우나 문화를 차용하여 하나의 제의적인 공간을 조성한다. 이전까지 선보여왔던 타일, 욕탕, 거울, 벌거벗은 신체와 같은 욕실의 기호들이 여전히 암시되고 있지만 이번 전시에서 이 요소들은 더 이상 한 개인에 귀속된 사적인 영역에 갇히지 않는다. 손과 발, 어깨와 무릎 등의 신체 일부가 한데 뒤엉켜 돌덩이 위로 녹아내리는 형상의 오브제로 표현된 &lt;Löyly (뢰일리) 1&gt;과 &lt;Löyly (뢰일리) 2&gt;는 각 신체 부위마다 두드러지는 해부학적 상이함이나 그로테스크하게 겹친 자세들을 통해 눈앞에 보이는 육체가 한 명의 것이 아니라는 사실을 여실히 드러낸다. 이는 출신과 직업이 서로 다른 인물들이 각자 통증을 느끼는 신체 부위를 라이프 캐스팅하여 만든 결과로, 작가에게 원래 나 홀로 나의 몸과 마음의 치유를 꾀하던 철저히 개인적인 ‘목욕’이란 행위가 다른 이와 그들의 이야기를 초대하는 공공의 장으로 거듭나는 과정을 거친다. 그 뒤로 거룩히 자리하고 있는 작업을 어느 제의적 공간의 입구에 있을 법한 성수대로 본다면 이는 특정 의식에 돌입하기 전 영혼과 육체가 깨끗해지길 빌기 위함일 테고, 이 의식은 다시금 선리에게 회복의 공간인 사우나에서 접할 수 있는 물질이나 사건들로 구성되었으리라 그려볼 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 《Sow-nar: 사우나》를 경험하는 방법의 하나는 흐르거나 고여있는 액체로 존재하는 ‘물’이라는 질료가 우리에게 다른 형태로 다가올 때의 감각을 상상해보는 일이다. 바로 지금 이 계절, 한겨울 추위에 얼어붙은 땅을 걸으며 눈송이를 맞는 당신은 낮은 온도에 굳어버린 얼음의 형태로 물을 만날 수도, 사우나에 들어서는 순간 눈앞에 뿌옇게 펼쳐지는 증기의 형태로 물을 느낄 수도 있다. 매서운 추위에 긴장하고 위축되어 지친 살과 근육을 달래며 기능해온 사우나에 기원을 두고 있는 선리의 작업 역시 얼음에서 물로, 물에서 수증기로, 그리고 다시 얼음 혹은 물로 흐르고(녹고), 굳고(얼고), 퍼지는(증발하는) 순환을 따르며 작동한다. 그의 작업들이 초대하는 흐름에 몸을 맡기다 멈추는 지점, 그곳은 어쩐지 형체 없이 흩어진 뿌연 증기가 한가득 채우고 있는 속일 것만 같다. Entering the Hazy Vapor Everyone has a sense of water that they remember. If the act of sticking one's head out into the world, either by birth or metaphorically, is ultimately about escaping from the water, then in reality, we are living with the sense of remaining in the water regardless of our will. Whether we experience the sensation created by close contact between flesh and water as fear or tranquility depends on how the individual body receives and utilizes the water. Let's assume that the movement of swimming in wide-open water while using the body's muscles to the maximum gives freedom to the body and mind in a way that defies gravity. In a sense, the act of quietly submerging one's body in stagnant water is an act of surrendering everything to the weight of the body sinking beneath the water and releasing the body’s tension gained from being outside the water. Among these cases, the physical sensations evoked by Sun Lee's work come from the energy of water and steam that peels away and melts the rigid body and mind, one by one. The title of the exhibition Sow-nar comes from the etymology of ‘Sauna,’ a subject that Sun Lee had long been interested in. Originating in Finland, sauna is a compound word of the exclamation ‘sow’ meaning ‘wow!’ and ‘nar’ meaning to sweat in. Sun Lee has broken down this word for bathing to carefully consider the meaning of the everyday activity. In Finland, bathing goes beyond the act of ‘cleansing the body’ as a hygienic function of washing away contaminants stuck to the body. It is a ritual activity involving repeated exposure of the body to cold water (bath) and hot steam (sauna). Sun Lee creates a ritual space by borrowing Finland's unique sauna culture, which restores not only the tired body but also the mind by relaxing tense muscles in a cold climate. Bathroom imagery—including tiles, bathtubs, mirrors, and naked bodies, which Sun Lee has consistently presented—are still included in her recent works, but in Sow-nar, these elements are no longer confined to the private realm belonging to one individual. Löyly 1 and Löyly 2, which depict objects in the shape of body parts such as hands, feet, shoulders, and knees, intertwined and melting into blocks of stone, represent anatomical differences in each body part. Through these grotesque overlapping postures, the viewer can see that the body parts on Sun Lee’s sculptures are made up of multiple bodies. These works are the result of life casting of parts of the body where people from different backgrounds and occupations feel pain. For the artist, the thoroughly personal act of bathing with the intention to heal one’s body and mind transforms into a public space where others are invited to share their stories. Additionally, Sun Lee’s work is placed in a manner inspired by sacred sites, becoming holy water pedestals that might be found at the entrance to a ritual space, and further evoking associations of ritual prayer and cleansing for the soul and body. This ritual is again composed of substances and events that can be encountered in the sauna, which is a space of recovery for Sun Lee. Sow-nar encourages consideration of the ways in which the substance water exists in different forms as a flowing or stagnant liquid. Right now, this season, you can be greeted by snowflakes while walking on the frozen ground in the cold of midwinter. You can encounter water in the form of ice that has hardened at low temperatures, or you can feel water in the form of hazy steam spreading out before your eyes the moment you enter the sauna. Sun Lee's work also has its origins in sauna, which functioned to soothe tired flesh and muscles that were tense and atrophied in the bitter cold. It follows a cycle of flowing (melting), solidifying (freezing), and spreading (evaporating) from ice to water, water to steam, and then back to ice or water. The point where her works stop while giving themselves over to the inviting flow seems to be a place filled with hazy, shapeless vapor. there is a perpetual tendency for modern people to question the significance of life in what is coined as having an existential crisis. This stems from the idea of existentialism as popularized by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre who proposed that existence precedes essence and “that man first exists: he materializes in the world, encounters himself, and only afterward defines himself”. The self in this case, is seen as a spontaneous identity that can be crafted through one’s assumption of authorship in the creation of self-narratives; ones that seek temporal coherence with the individual’s reassembled past, perceived present and anticipated future that ascribes meaning towards his life. In the process of selfhood, an individual might still feel radically incomplete as one’s desire to assign meaning to himself is never quite achieved due to the invariably renewed ideal of his being. Consequently, the perplexity of the existential self presents the spiritual dilemma of the contemporary era. In the quest for seeking oneself and its inherent meaning of existence, people often turn to alterity for answers. The encounters with the otherness of peculiar objects, unfamiliar environments, sublime nature and disparate cultures for example, may trigger possibilities of discoveries, growth and transformation within the self as the individual relates to the transcendental experience of the other. Such sensibilities may push the boundaries of one’s imagination of the self and open doors for its redefinition. How exactly do such epiphanies add significance to our ever-changing selves and allow us to reformulate our very existence? What is it in alterity that offers such alluring solace in times of self doubt and personal crisis? Exploring the foregoing inclinations of modernity, the exhibition presents works from six artists – whom in their search for intrinsic meaning, turn to various forms of otherness such as nature, objects, the body, etc. for inspirations. The disparate artworks culminate into an array of autobiographical visual narratives that aim to cast a light upon the elusive existential self. 현대인들은 끊임없이 자신들이 겪고있는 실존적 위기에 관련하여 삶의 중요성에 의문을 갖는다.&nbsp;프랑스 철학자 잘 폴 사르트르는 실존주의 철학을 통해 실존은 본질을 앞선다고 주장하였다.&nbsp;태초에 인간성,&nbsp;존재는 무엇도 의미하지 않기에 존재,&nbsp;본질이 이 가치&nbsp;및 의미는 당초에는 존재하지 않으며 후에 만들어진 것이라고 이야기한다.&nbsp;이러한&nbsp;질문 속에서&nbsp;개인의 과거를 재 조립하고 현재를 인식하며 자신의 삶에 의미를 부여하고자 하는 현대인들의 과정이 불완전하다고 느낄 수 있다.&nbsp;즉 실존적 자아의 당혹감은 현대 시대의 영적 딜레마를 보여주는 것이다. 나 자신과 존재의 내제적인 의미를 찾아가는 과정에서 사람들은 종종 다름을 그&nbsp;대답으로서&nbsp;의지한다.&nbsp;예를 들어 특이한 대상,&nbsp;낯선&nbsp;환경,&nbsp;숭고한 자연,&nbsp;이질적인 문화와의 만남은 스스로가&nbsp;개별자로서&nbsp;다른 사람의 초월적 경험과 관련되면서 자신 안에서 발견,&nbsp;성장의 가능성을 촉발할 수 있다.&nbsp;그 이번&nbsp;전시는 앞서 언급한 현대적 성향을&nbsp;탐구하는 총 여섯 명의 작가들의 작품을 선보인다.&nbsp;그들은&nbsp;내제적인&nbsp;의미를 찾기 위해 자연,&nbsp;사물,&nbsp;신체 등과 같은 다양한&nbsp;형태의 영감에&nbsp;의지한다.&nbsp;서로 다른 예술 작품들은 결국 이해하기 힘든 실존적 자아에 빚을 던지려는 자전적인 시각적 서술로&nbsp;귀결된다.
